WHAT THE TWO-YKAR-OLDS DID.
Below Daily Racing Form presents the per-
formances to date of the 2-year-olds of 1898 that
promise well for the future. Other youngsters
thau these here named have won races, but, on
the whole, it may be quite safely assumed that
in this list is comprised the names of the win-
ders of the great 3-year-old stakes of next year.
One point observable in this table, as in all
similar annual tables, is that the horses, no
matter how good, that win more races than
they lose, are decidedly scarce.
The heroine of the early spring racing, May
Hempstead, is the only unbeaten one. It is
more than probable that she was a really high
class filly, but the accident that retired her be-
fore she had met any of the real stars of her
age prevents any reliable estimate of her capa-
city. Espionage holds the pride of place in
respect to having won the greatest number of
races and will almost certainly add to her score
before the year ends. But the 2-year-olds that
show best in the way of percentage of racee
won, are Ventoro, Onomastus, Heliobas, Jean
Beraud, Spirituelle, Satin Slipper, Rush, Alpen,
Fra nk Bell, and Black Venus. Most of them, it
yiSist be admitted, are pretty good ones. Under
' Virginia Bradley’s heroic methods Boney Boy
shows the surprising aggregate of 56 starts and
he is still gallantly in the ring. Nick Hall’s
useful filly Canace has the ill-luck record of
seventeen seconds, most of which were decided
against her by heads, noses and eye lashes.

Good Sport at New Orleans.
New Orleans, La., November 26.— The rac-
ing today was excellent and the 3,000 people
present had a good day’s sport Frost outrode
Burns when it came to a finish in the race of
the day — the fourth. He used good judgment
with David and allowed Macy to race hi6 head
off. Speculation was lively. Nine books drew in.
ORMONDES AND ST. CARLOS.
Of the recent sale at San Francisco in which
the first of the progeny of Ormonde ever offered
at auction in this country, were sold, the
Breeder and Sportsman says:
•‘Three St. Carlo yearling fillies owned by Mr.
Macdonough and two yearling colts by the same
sire and owned by Dr. Posey and P. W. 8elby,
Esq., respectively, were sold first. They aver-
aged $350. A filly by Morello brought but $150.
Then the first of the Ormonde fillies was brought
into the ring and there was a craning of necks.
She was a grand looker and no mistake, and
was started at $500. There were a half doze*
bidders at first, but it finally settled down to a
contest between W. B Sink, Jr., and Ed Lanni-
gan. Mr. Sink finished stronger than his oppon-
ent and his bid of $2,300 secured the handsome
filly amid applause.
“The average forjthe five Ormondes sold was
$1,070. The grand total of the sale was $7,250
and the average for all was $660.”
The following were the prices obtained for
each :

NOTES OF THE TURF.
On account of extremely cold weather the
Saturday racing programs at Washington and
Lexington were declared off. The weather
clerk having promised warmer weather for
Monday, good entry lists appear today for both
tracks.
The stakes of the Coney Island Jockey Club,
which closed November 15, filled as follows:
Foam, to be run in 1899 118 entries; Surf, to be
run in 1899, 112; Tidal, to be run in 1900, 117.
Fifty nominators made entry, including all the
big stables in the country. The next closing of
Sheepshead Bay stakes will be early in January
and will include the rich Futurity.
